Tabernanthe iboga is a shrub of the dogbane family, growing in the rainforest understorey of Gabon and across into Cameroon and the Congo. Glossy elliptical leaves in opposite pairs, small cream tubular flowers in loose clusters, and a smooth ovoid fruit that ripens from green to a deep yellow-orange.

What is used is the root, and within the root the bark rather than the whole of it — hence the product's name. It is dug, stripped, dried and milled to a pale fibrous powder the colour of weak tea.

Eboka is the name the Bwiti of Gabon give it, and it is the word printed on the tube. The plant sits at the centre of Bwiti initiation, where it is taken once, in quantity, over a night, in company and under supervision. That is a tradition with a long recorded history and it is not what is in this tube — but it is why the plant has the standing it does, and why we ask you to approach it with respect.

The capsule

What is in a capsule

100mg of dried iboga root bark, and 400mg of okra powder — a fifth of the capsule is the plant and the rest is what carries it. Okra is a mucilaginous pod: milled, it holds a fine powder together and gives a small quantity of bark enough bulk to fill a capsule and be swallowed evenly.

Iboga root bark carries a family of indole alkaloids, and ibogaine is the one with a name outside botany. It is the psychoactive compound in the plant. Dried root bark is not a standardised material — how much ibogaine is in it varies with the plant, the root and the season, in a way an extract does not.

Microdose describes the size of the dose rather than anything about the plant: this is the root bark without a full-dose experience. A ceremonial dose is a different order of quantity, taken once rather than on a rhythm, and it is not what this tube holds.

The week

4 or 5 days, then a break

1 capsule, 4 or 5 days a week, then 2 or 3 days without. That is a range rather than one fixed week — 4 days on and 3 off, or 5 on and 2 off.

We also recommend running it for about 2 months and then stopping — stopping, not tapering — to re-evaluate before starting again.

Before any of that: try 1 capsule, or the starter pouch, and see how you respond before committing to a full course. The five-capsule pouch exists for exactly that, and costs a fraction of the tube.

The list of who should not take it

This is the list of who should not take iboga at all, and it is long. It does not ask for care — it asks people in these situations not to take it.

Psychotic and schizophrenic disorders. Cerebellar dysfunction. Coagulation abnormalities or a history of blood clots. Uncontrolled diabetes. Emphysema. Crohn's disease. Chronic fainting. Gastric ulcer. Heart disease, heart murmurs, or heart arrhythmia. Uncontrolled high blood pressure. Active blood infections. Severe obesity. Pneumonia. Kidney disease. Liver disease with liver enzymes over four times normal. Pregnancy. Stroke.

Two things from us on top of it. Iboga and ibogaine are powerful substances, there are risks in using them, and they should be used under the guidance of an experienced practitioner. And ibogaine is a controlled substance in a number of countries and is not legal everywhere — worth checking against wherever you are, rather than assuming.

Finding a rhythm you can keep

1 capsule on a dose day, 4 or 5 days a week, then 2 or 3 days without — 4 on and 3 off, or 5 on and 2 off. We recommend about 2 months of it before stopping to re-evaluate, and ask that you try a single capsule first.

Four on, three off

16 dose days in four weeks on the Four a week schedule — four on, three off, repeating. Most people run a schedule for about six weeks before taking a longer break.

Before you start

A note on informed use

Plant medicine deserves preparation. For most people this is gentle and uneventful, but some situations call for a conversation first.

Talk to someone first if:

  • You take prescription medication of any kind
  • You or your family have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
  • You have a heart condition or blood pressure that isn't well controlled
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You simply aren't sure whether this is for you

SSRIs and other antidepressants

They compete for the same serotonin receptors, and can dull the effect substantially. People who feel nothing at all are often taking one without having made the connection. It doesn't rule anything out; it does mean the timing is worth discussing with your doctor first.

Iboga

It’s a week later after I finished the whole micro dose , my experience, day one I took one on a full stomach I felt a buzz through out my body from like 5 minutes. Second day I took took one again I had pain on the back of my neck and on my eye . On the 3rd day I took 1 I felt nothing physical but I noticed calmness mentally I played with my toddler and enjoyed myself normally I would get bored and tired but my mind was still and I was fully present with my child and this has stayed on since . After the first four days I took a two day break and started to take two capsules a day I felt stronger while working out I enjoyed going outside and just being in the garden in nature, i did feel chest pains when I took the micro dose while dehydrated so I would say drinking plenty of water to avoid that , am grateful to cosmic bazaar for my birthday i like to treat myself to their products
