The chocolate

Cacao butter, cacao, mesquite, dates

Five things go into it and four are food: organic cacao butter, organic cacao powder, organic mesquite and organic Zamli dates. The fifth is the mushroom.

Cacao butter is the fat pressed out of the cocoa bean — pale ivory, solid at room temperature, and the reason a chocolate is firm in the hand and not in the mouth. Cacao powder is what is left of the same bean once that fat is taken out, and it carries the colour and the bitterness. Between them they are the whole of the chocolate.

Mesquite is milled from the seed pods of a desert legume and is sweet on its own; so are dates, and Zamli is the variety. No sugar goes in on top of them, which is what the tube means by its three words: organic, vegan, sugar free.

The hearts are a mould and nothing more — the same chocolate would be the same chocolate as a disc.

Eating one

One heart is the unit

This is a food. It is eaten rather than swallowed with water, and the mushroom is milled through the chocolate rather than sitting loose in a shell — so a heart is the unit, and the only way to take part of one is to break it.

They come five to a paper tube, whose lid lifts off at a seam a third of the way down and goes back on, or five in a refill pouch for someone who already has the tube. The chocolate is the same in both.

What does not come with them is a schedule. There is no dosing note on this product at all — no quantity, no frequency, no time of day — and we would rather say so than carry a rhythm across from another product.
