Red kratom

The tree
Kratom is Mitragyna speciosa — a tropical tree in the Rubiaceae, which makes coffee its best-known relative. Large glossy leaves come in opposite pairs along woody stems, and the leaves are the whole of the product.
The tree is native to Southeast Asia and has been used there and in Africa for a long time, in tradition and in ceremony. This one is African-grown. We buy from a single organic farm in Uganda and import from them directly, which is uncommon enough that most kratom sold anywhere has never been near that continent.
Buying from one farm rather than from the market is the decision everything else rests on. It is why there are three jars here instead of a rotating list of strain names, and why we can say what happened to the leaf.
The vein
Turn the leaf over. Down the centre runs the midrib, and out of it the side veins arc away in even pairs to the edge. On this leaf all of that is a clear red-brown, and it carries on down the stalk into the stem. That is the red. It is a feature of the leaf you can point at, and it is the only thing the word describes.
In the trade the colour is taken as a rough record of when in its growth the leaf was picked and what happened to it between the tree and the mill — the same leaf handled two ways does not come out the same. The green sits between this and the white, whose midrib stays pale cream-green.
The colour is the smaller half of the story, though. Kratom is a heavily marketed plant, the strain names most of all: batches do differ, but ninety-nine times in a hundred the difference is in where the leaf grew, which subspecies it is, how it was grown and how it was dried.
So we stopped selling names. We used to carry Green Borneo, White Maeng Da, Bali Gold, Red Borneo, Red Vein Horn, Yellow Maeng Da, Green Maeng Da and Green Vein Kapuas. Now there is one farm and three veins — this red, a green and a white.
The powder
The leaves dry in the wind rather than under heat, and then go to the mill. What goes into the jar is leaf and only leaf: no additives, no fillers, nothing blended in to make it go further.
No batch is sold before it has been through a lab — salmonella, E. coli, heavy metals and other foreign contaminants. On a bulk plant powder that panel is the part you cannot check yourself, which is what makes a single known farm worth more than a good price.
It is bitter, so a dose goes into a small amount of warm water or a smoothie and is chased with something that tastes better. We suggest 30 to 60 minutes before food; our bands are 1–2g mild, 3–4g moderate, 5–8g strong.
We ask that it be used sparingly, and we say so plainly rather than in a footnote. We would also rather you had come to this leaf after other plants than before them.

I was very skeptical about this actually working (for pain relief). Decided to try it out anyway and drove an hour and a half to their store in Cape Town. Well, I was wrong to be skeptical. My constant nagging pain is actually noticeably dulled (though not gone). Very surprised; it was worth the drive. I also feel more relaxed and, honestly, somewhat high. Five stars because I was expecting it to do nothing.
Kratom is a powerful and very versatile plant medicine which can support you in many different ways. Its effects are more stimulating at lower doses and more relaxing at higher doses, while paradoxically providing both effects simultaneously and in perfect equilibrium (within reasonable doses). It's a mood enhancer, pain reliever, social lubricant and energy booster all in one. It's one of the most beneficial plants I work with. It's great to see an African variety sold here (most comes from South East Asia) which matches the quality of the kratom sold elsewhere while being even more cost effective. The colour of the strain supposedly determines the emphasis of the different effects, but I find that the dosage has a much bigger impact on the experience. Suffice it to say that all colours are great and beneficial.
Hi there, I've been using kratom for a few years on and off. Have tried almost every brand and strain (type of kratom) out there. I can honestly say that I've never came across a brand with the same quality as this. Excellent. If you are a kratom fan, then this is the one for you.
