Amalaki translates to "the sustainer." It has a cooling effect on the body, balancing a pitta disposition, though it is suitable for all three doshas. It regenerates and enlivens all tissues and is said to increase ojas. Ojas is the "essence of vigor" and imparts immunity, strength, and happiness. Amla contains five of the six essential tastes (rasas): sour, sweet, bitter, pungent, and astringent. It lacks only a salty taste.

The Amalaki berry is a powerhouse of antioxidants, polyphenols, tannins, bioflavanoids, amino acids, trace minerals, and other phytonutrients, as well as being a highly concentrated source of vitamin C.

Amalaki is part of triphala, which is a powerful herbal remedy that consists of Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amalaki.

 Dosage:

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon twice daily in warm water. Typically, 500-1000 mg is a standard dose.
