Sceletium
Organically grown Sceletium tortuosum, also known as kanna, made into a fine water-soluble extract. Measure it a pinch at a time or dissolve it in a cold drink.
The plant
Sceletium tortuosum is a low-growing succulent from southern Africa's dry interior, with fleshy leaves, woody stems and small white flowers. Kanna is one of its names. The Afrikaans name kougoed means something to chew, reflecting a traditional way of taking it.
The Khoikhoi worked with it for hundreds of years, dried and chewed and shared in company. The older preparation was a fermentation: the plant bruised and left to sweat, traditionally in an animal skin, which reduces its oxalates and changes the alkaloids it carries.

The extract
An extract concentrates part of the plant into a smaller amount of material. The plant compounds are drawn into a solvent, the solvent is removed, and a fine concentrated powder remains. Use this concentrated powder a pinch at a time.
The powder is water-soluble, so it disperses through a cold drink instead of sitting on the surface. Water is one practical way to take it.
Mannitol is a sugar alcohol used as a carrier. It gives the fine extract enough bulk to handle, measure and dissolve evenly.
How to take it
Take a very small pinch straight on the tongue, or stir it into water, juice, tea or a smoothie. It can also be blended into a herbal smoking mix.
Increase only gradually, and only once you know how you respond to it. How much is enough varies with the person, the method, body weight and tolerance.

Sceletium is a subtle yet powerful medicine that can aid in coping with anxiety and depression. It is gentle at lower doses, creating space within which you can handle life with more grace, and at higher doses it can be heart opening and empathogenic. It has improved my life in many noticeable ways and I feel immense gratitude to it. The most common and widely available form is raw plant material (also sold here). This works well enough but can cause nausea at higher doses. This extract is far more effective as it eliminates this issue and the experience is smoother. Dosing is a challenge since it's highly concentrated and easy to take too much by accident, but start small and gradually increase the dose until you find what works for you. The elixir (also sold here) provides a similar refined experience and is easier to dose.
